Book Three Has Found a Home
Aug 21, 2023
I’m thrilled to announce that my third novel has found a home with ECW Press in Toronto. This is my second go around with ECW, so I can attest to the care and attention they give to authors through all stages of production. I’ll be working again with the fabulous Jen Knoch, senior editor, which fills me with joy.
While we haven’t finalized the title yet, here is a little about the story and its characters:
Nick Ackerman’s rudderless future takes a sharp turn when he learns he has a 14-year-old son whose grandma can no longer look after him. Railroaded into fatherhood, Nick takes in the resentful Billy and carts Grandma Evie off to the nearby dementia ward at Prairie View Manor. Billy rejects Nick’s clumsy attempts at parenting, choosing instead to spend his time at Prairie View, where he and his grandma pour their artistic talents into painting murals for her unit.
Single parent Sarah is a housekeeper at Prairie View, whose five-year old son spends his days with an indifferent babysitter, a dismal arrangement, but all she can afford. Sarah is desperately trying to build a better life for her son, despite a menacing boss and the rash of inexplicable thefts at Prairie View, which are turning the place upside down.
Over the dog days of summer, Nick, Billy and Sarah find themselves caught up with the kindnesses and cruelties of life’s new dramas and demands. The novel cuts back and forth among these characters to expose their betrayals and secrets and the extraordinary power of second chances.
While I’m itching to share these characters’ lives with you, we’ll have to be patient. Spring 2025 is the release date. In the meantime, may your hours be filled with the magic of good books and treasured new favourites.
